Is everyone online social? What does it mean to be online in 2016?
Within today’s society there is constant debate over the emergence of technology and whether it provides benefits or disadvantages amongst individuals who rely on it. It’s important to note that due to the modernization of technology we as a species have been able to sustain life farther than expected. Unfortunately due to the presumptuous nature of society, the beneficial composition of technology has been used to antagonize rather than levitate individuals.
The article “Jeffrey Rosen, “the Web Means the End of Forgetting” ” gives us a glimpse of the drawbacks of social media and the impact it plays to not only our potential careers, but our reputations as well. Accordingly, there is a lack of privacy and vast openness to social media sites such as Facebook, where individuals from all walks of life can easily gain access to your profile and depict you in whatever manner depending on the content that is displayed in your personal profile. As stated in the article “today all of us are learning to expect the scrutiny that used to be reserved for the famous and the infamous”. Social media does give us the ability to freely express our ideas or values..but unfortunately…in this day of age we are restricted and being supervised by various sectors.
“In practice, however, self-governing communities like Wikipedia — or algorithmically self-correcting systems like Google — often leave people feeling misrepresented and burned.” To be online in 2016 means to be spectated.
Something that we as individuals are compelled to is the power to control. Certainly, there is no shortage of disagreement that blog spots and social networks allow us to control how we want to ideally portray ourselves. Because of such internet features, we are able to create our own desired personas, our own personal fables, and an alternate digital life that helps escape from reality. Such factors wall us off from maturely and mentally striving.
