Over the years, social media has made one of the biggest impacts on our society.  Many people around the world participate in the activities and fundamentals social media has to offer.  Some of your popular media websites today includes instagram, facebook, and twitter.  When first originated, its main objective was designed to connect like minded people as well as engage in fun activities.  As media websites evolved, it formed negative and positive effects due to its use.

Taking the world by storm, social media has been dominantly influential to many.  Children are mainly targeted online, becoming victims of the negative trends social media offers.  According to the article “Clinical Report,” children are imposed by disturbed acts online including cyber bullying, sexual content and peer pressure.  Although in the eyes of children, social media appears to be fun, they fail to realize its negativity.  It also forms a distraction to their learning abilities as children appear to substitute their school work for media websites.  It takes away their concentration and intelligence.  Parents are at fault also, as they lack in monitoring their children online.  Parents should educate their children on the proper use of social media as well as using it responsibly.

Although media websites portrays negative influences, its contributions can also have a positive impact on our society.  Online websites can be beneficial when it informs us of current important news that revolves around the world and community.  Websites like facebook also displays stories we find extremely interesting and feeds positive knowledge that may apply to our everyday life.  According the article “How Facebook is Changing the way its Users Consume Journalism,” 30 percent of people rely on facebook as a source of information and news.  Children can also benefit as they can connect with one another for school activities and projects leading to a great academic performance.  It is clear the media has a tremendous impact on our culture.  We will have to determine ourselves whether it will have a positive or negative impact on our lives.
